Laughter, Learning, and Lifelong Mentorship: A Photographic Journey Through Widener's CHHS
Once upon a time, in a vibrant land of learning and laughter known as Widener University, a grand adventure unfolded. The quest? To capture the heart and soul of the College of Health & Human Services through a magical photography shoot. Armed with my trusty camera and an infectious sense of whimsy, I embarked on a mission to create a library of images that would serve as versatile treasures for various uses and mediums.
The goal was clear: we needed action-oriented photos that showcased student experts and faculty mentorship in the most authentic, in-the-moment style. No stiff poses or staged smiles here! The essence of Widener’s dynamic and nurturing environment had to shine through each shot.
This was no solo endeavor. The shoot was a harmonious collaboration with the fantastic faculty and the ever-enthusiastic marketing department. Together, we planned to capture the vibrant life within the OT/PT and Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) programs.

OT/PT: A Dance of Organized Chaos
Our journey began in the bustling halls of the Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy departments. The scene was a delightful dance of organized chaos. Students were deeply engaged in their hands-on learning experiences, their faces glowing with concentration and joy. Faculty members moved gracefully among them, offering guidance like wise mentors in a fairy tale.
With a skip in my step, I weaved through the energetic crowd, snapping photos of candid moments. One student adjusted equipment with the precision of a master craftsman, while another engaged in an animated discussion about patient care. It was beautifully organic, a bit more chaotic than planned, but brimming with authenticity. The spontaneity added a layer of magic to the photos that no rigid shot list could ever capture.
SLP: The Art of Structured Brilliance
Next, we ventured into the serene world of Speech-Language Pathology. Here, the atmosphere was one of structured brilliance. The SLP team had meticulously prepared a variety of scenarios and interactions for us to capture. It was like walking into a well-choreographed play, where every scene was perfectly timed and executed.
As I clicked away, I captured students working one-on-one with clients, faculty demonstrating techniques, and lively group discussions. The structured approach here provided a rich tapestry of images, each one a testament to the careful planning and the vibrant life of the program.

When the day of shooting came to a close, we had amassed a treasure trove of photos. Reviewing them felt like opening a chest of gold and jewels. The images were dynamic, full of life, and radiated the essence of Widener University’s College of Health & Human Services.
These photos have since become invaluable assets for the university. They’ve been used in self-mailers to help build the fall 2024 classes for Occupational Therapy (OT) and Speech-Language Pathology (SLP). Each image speaks volumes about the exceptional mentorship and hands-on learning environment that Widener offers.
Looking back, I realize that finding the balance between letting the shoot happen organically and adhering to a rigid shot list is an art. The OT/PT portion, though more free-spirited than planned, yielded photos that were raw and real. In contrast, the structured approach of the SLP shoot provided a comprehensive array of meticulously captured moments.

The university’s dedication to fostering a dynamic, supportive, and engaging learning environment shines through every photo.
