Confession: I Love the Retouching Process

Photography doesn’t end when the shutter clicks—that’s just the beginning. For me, the real magic happens in the quiet hours behind the screen, fine-tuning every detail to create a portrait that feels authentically you.

But lately, I’ve taken on a side quest: revisiting photos I captured years ago. Armed with new skills and fresh eyes, I’ve been breathing new life into old favorites. Curious to see how a late-night re-edit turned out? Let me take you behind the scenes of my retouching process.

Okay, I’ll just say it: I’m obsessed with retouching.

Sure, the moment when the camera clicks is exciting—the lighting is perfect, the pose feels spot-on, and you’ve nailed the look. But once the session is over and I get to sit down at my computer, that’s when a different kind of magic happens. Retouching is where the image goes from great to wow.

And lately, I’ve been doing something unexpected: digging through my old files and re-editing photos from years ago. Why? Because apparently, my past self was on a mission to teach my present self a thing or two.

This photo may be a few years old, but thanks to a late-night re-edit (and probably too much sweet tea), I’ve given it a little extra sparkle to match the magic we captured back then.

What Re-Editing Taught Me

Let me paint you a picture. A few years ago, I took a portrait of Hannah. At the time, I was pretty proud of it. The lighting was solid, her pose was confident, and the final image looked good. Fast-forward to today: I opened that same photo and thought, Oh Hannah, I owe you an apology.

It wasn’t a bad photo—it was just... safe. I hadn’t yet learned how to finesse the details. I hadn’t discovered the joy of subtlety or the art of dialing back the heavy-handed edits. So, I gave Janet’s photo a second life.

With a few tweaks, I softened the shadows, removed the glare on her glasses, and refined the little details. Suddenly, the image felt alive. It felt like Hannah. And let me tell you, re-editing old work is like finding a sweater in the back of your closet that you forgot you loved—it feels new again.

Retouching Isn’t Cheating—It’s an Upgrade

I know what some of you might be thinking: “Isn’t retouching just Photoshop magic? Like giving someone a digital facelift?” Not in my world. Retouching is less about changing who you are and more about showing the best version of you—the one who didn’t get sabotaged by bad lighting or a rogue flyaway hair.

Here’s what I don’t do:

  • Erase your laugh lines (because hello, those are earned).

  • Transform you into someone your mom wouldn’t recognize.

  • Turn your skin into that shiny, plastic doll look.

Here’s what I do do:

  • Fix that one stray hair that decided to rebel.

  • Tame the shadows under your eyes (because we all know sleep is a myth).

  • Enhance your natural glow so that you look like you just stepped out of a rom-com montage.

Think of it like this: retouching is the makeup artist for your photos. It’s not about creating perfection; it’s about highlighting what’s already there.

Why Re-Editing Feels Like a Time Machine

Re-editing old photos has been surprisingly therapeutic. It’s like opening a time capsule filled with all the choices I made back then. Some are solid. Others? Let’s just say, I owe a few people a drink.

What I love most is seeing how much I’ve evolved. Once upon a time, I thought cranking up the skin-smoothing slider was peak creativity (spoiler: it wasn’t even close). Now, I’m aiming for authenticity—edits that fade into the background, clearing distractions so your brilliance takes center stage.

It’s also a reminder that I can’t change the lighting or posing choices I made in the past. What’s done is done. But I can take everything I’ve learned since then and apply it to those images. It’s like giving them a second chance to shine—and who doesn’t love a good redemption arc?

The Zen of Retouching

When I’m retouching, I’m in my happy place. It’s just me, my computer, and a playlist of absolute bangers. The world fades away as I zoom into the tiniest details, tweaking them with all the care of someone decorating a cupcake (and believe me, I take cupcakes very seriously).

This is where the magic happens:

  • I adjust the lighting so your skin looks soft and radiant.

  • I enhance the sharpness in your eyes because let’s be honest—they’re the stars of the show.

  • I remove the pimple that rudely invited itself to our shoot (you’re welcome).

It’s a slow, thoughtful process that’s equal parts art and science. And yes, I love every second of it.

Why It Matters

Here’s the thing: I don’t just retouch for the sake of retouching. I do it because I want you to look at your photo and feel like a rockstar. Whether it’s a headshot for LinkedIn or a portrait for your living room wall, the final image should make you think, Wow, that’s me.

And when someone compliments your photo, I want you to feel proud—not because it’s heavily edited, but because it genuinely feels like you. (Because you are pretty amazing!)

A Word About Misconceptions

I get it—retouching has a bad rap. People hear “Photoshop” and immediately picture magazine covers where celebrities look like they’ve been carved out of wax. That’s not my vibe.

The goal is never to make you look fake. It’s to make you look like the best version of yourself—the one who’s confident, radiant, and ready to take on the world.

Let’s Talk About Collaboration

Here’s a fun fact: retouching is a team sport. Sometimes, I’ll send a client a draft of their photo and ask, “How do you feel about this tone?” or “Would you like the background softened?” These little touchpoints ensure that the final image aligns with your vision, not just mine.

And if you’re worried about being too picky, don’t be. I love when clients get involved—it means you care about the photo as much as I do.

The Bottom Line

Your headshot is more than just a photo—it’s your first impression, your handshake before you even step into the room. Whether you’re building your brand, seeking new opportunities, or simply wanting to feel confident about the image you present to the world, a great headshot opens doors. Let’s create one that not only captures your best self but also tells your story. Don’t settle for ordinary—book your session today and show the world how extraordinary you are!

And hey, if nothing else, you’ll give me an excuse to dive back into my favorite part of the process. Now, excuse me while I go re-edit that one photo I took in 2015. Spoiler: it’s about to look amazing.

Caleb’s Journey to an Amazing Headshot: Authenticity Shines

What happens when a headshot session turns into a full-on family affair? Caleb and Cachi brought warmth, authenticity, and even a little two-year-old charm to the studio! From capturing stunning individual headshots to highlighting their teamwork at Cru with a photo together, this session was all about showcasing their unique story.

Curious about how headshots can elevate your personal brand and reflect your authentic self? Dive into this story and see why you’re amazing—and why the world deserves to see it!

Headshot of Caleb Woo by studio428

Sometimes, the path to a great headshot takes a little extra planning, but it’s always worth the wait. Caleb and I had been talking about his headshot for a while. Between schedules and the ever-evolving demands of life, it took some time to find the perfect day. But once we did, everything clicked into place.

The result? A headshot that truly captures who Caleb is.

A Family Visit to the Studio

One of the highlights of Caleb’s session was the company he brought along—his wife, Cachi, and their two-year-old daughter. Not only did they bring an extra layer of warmth to the studio, but the session turned into a wonderful family affair.

Cachi decided to get her headshot done as well, and since she and Caleb work together at Cru, we captured a beautiful shot of the two of them together. Seeing their shared passion and teamwork was inspiring, and it added a unique dimension to the session.

Side note: Headshots for two-year-olds? Absolutely the cutest thing ever! While Caleb and Cachi were the stars of the day, their little one stole a bit of the spotlight with her charm.

Authenticity: The Key to an Amazing Headshot

As a headshot photographer serving Delaware, New Castle County, and the Philadelphia area, I’ve seen firsthand how a great headshot can elevate a personal brand. It’s not just a picture—it’s a statement about who you are and what you bring to the table.

That’s why authenticity matters so much. Caleb’s headshot didn’t come together because of lighting or posing alone—it worked because we captured him. His confidence, his energy, his personality. The same goes for Cachi’s headshot and their photo together—it’s all about showcasing who they are, both as individuals and as a team.

You’re Amazing. Let’s Show the World.

As the headshot guru, I believe everyone has something unique that makes them stand out. Caleb and Cachi’s session is a great reminder that headshots are more than a professional necessity—they’re an opportunity to showcase your amazing self (and sometimes your partnerships) to the world.

Whether you’re in Delaware, New Castle County, or the Philadelphia area, I’m here to help you craft the perfect headshot that represents your authentic self. So, if you’ve been putting off updating your personal brand photography, take a page from Caleb and Cachi’s book.

Let’s find a time to make it happen. Together, we’ll create an image that’s not just professional but authentically you.

Because you’re amazing. Let’s show the world.

Superman AND Clark Kent

At the end of the day, your headshots should tell the world who you are. And you’re not just one thing—you’re amazing, and that deserves to be seen from every angle. Whether you’re bringing out your inner Clark Kent, Superman, or even Batman (minus the cape, of course), we’ll make sure every side of your professional story shines through.

Let’s talk superheroes for a second. You know how Superman has that whole Clark Kent disguise? It’s wild how the guy saves the world in the morning, then blends into a crowd by lunch with nothing more than a pair of glasses and a suit change. One second, he’s larger than life—invincible, unstoppable. The next, he’s just your regular, mild-mannered reporter, blending in without a second thought. It’s a simple trick, but the effect is massive.

Now, you might be thinking, “Cool superhero analogy, but what does that have to do with headshots?” And the answer is… pretty much everything.

See, headshots are your Clark Kent/Superman moment. When you walk into a headshot session, you’re not just getting a nice picture to slap on LinkedIn or your website. You’re giving the world a glimpse of who you are. And here’s the thing: you’re amazing—and there’s more than one side to you. So why not show that off?

Enter Todd Metzger and His Game-Changing Outfit Strategy

I was reminded of this during a session with one of my clients, Todd Metzger. Now, Todd’s the kind of guy who thinks ahead. He came to his headshot session not just ready to smile at the camera, but with a change of clothes. And let me tell you, that little bit of extra planning made all the difference.

We started off with Todd in a smart gray suit jacket, paired with a brown button-down that coordinated perfectly, topped off with a nice pocket square. The look was polished, stylish, and quietly confident. You know the kind of outfit that says, “I’m here to handle business”? That’s exactly what Todd’s attire conveyed. We captured that vibe—crisp, professional shots that were ideal for when Todd wants to present his serious, executive side. The images were sharp, showcasing a leader who's both refined and ready to get things done.

But halfway through the session, Todd switched things up. He swapped the suit for a simple black t-shirt and struck a strong, confident pose. The energy completely shifted. This wasn’t the boardroom powerhouse anymore—this was Todd at his most authentic, self-assured but relaxed, ready to take on whatever came his way. The look was bold and approachable, giving off a vibe that said, “I’m here to get things done, but I’m easy to work with.” Still professional, but with a down-to-earth, no-nonsense twist.

Here’s the kicker: both versions were 100% Todd. And both were equally important. One shot shows the world his serious side—the one he leans on when he’s leading meetings, presenting to clients, or pitching a big idea. The other shows the side of him that’s down-to-earth, relatable, and easygoing—the version that makes him the kind of guy people want to work with. Same person, two looks, and a world of difference in how they’re received.

The Magic of Multiple Looks

Now, why does this matter? Because we’re all multifaceted. You’re not just one thing, and your headshot doesn’t need to be, either.

Maybe you’re a CEO by day, but you’re also the coach of your kid’s soccer team or a mentor in your community. Or maybe you’re a creative professional, but you also lead a business—balancing that mix of innovative thinking with serious strategy. Whatever it is, you’ve got more than one side to show, and a single headshot just isn’t enough to capture all of that.

Here’s where that extra outfit comes in. By simply changing your clothes, you can present different aspects of who you are, without feeling like you have to squeeze everything into one frame. A suit says one thing; a more casual look says something else entirely. Together, they tell a fuller, more authentic story.

Why You Should Bring a Change of Clothes to Your Next Headshot Session

So, let’s talk about why bringing a change of clothes to your headshot session is a game-changer. Here are a few reasons why that extra outfit can take your session from “good” to “wow.”

1. You Get More Versatility

Think about all the different places you might use your headshots. LinkedIn? Sure. But what about your website’s “About Me” page? Or your email signature? Or even your speaking engagement bio? Each of these platforms might call for a slightly different look, and a single headshot might not fit every scenario.

By having multiple outfits, you get a variety of looks, each with its own vibe. Need something professional for LinkedIn? Got it. Something a bit friendlier for your website? Done. Want a shot that’s laid-back but still polished for that podcast you're launching? Easy.

Having options means you’re always ready for any situation, without needing to book a new session every time.

2. You Can Highlight Different Aspects of Your Personality

You’re not just a job title—you’re a whole person with layers, interests, and passions. Bringing a change of clothes lets you show off those different sides of yourself. Maybe you want to capture your leadership side in a suit, but also your creative side in a more relaxed outfit. Or maybe you want to show that you’re both approachable and authoritative, depending on the situation.

With multiple outfits, you can reflect the full spectrum of who you are. And that’s what people connect with—not just your résumé, but you.

3. You Stay Prepared for Different Audiences

Here’s the reality: different audiences respond to different vibes. If you’re speaking at a conference, you might want a shot that’s more polished and commanding. But if you’re introducing yourself to potential clients, you might want something a bit more relaxed and welcoming.

By having both looks, you can tailor your headshots to the audience you’re speaking to—whether that’s the corporate boardroom or a group of creatives at a networking event.

4. You Stand Out by Being True to Yourself

One of the biggest myths about headshots is that they’re just supposed to be super professional and serious all the time. But guess what? People connect with people. Showing a bit of your personality—whether it’s through a fun outfit or a more casual look—can actually make you stand out.

When you feel comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing, that comes through in the photos. And trust me, people notice.

How to Choose Your Outfits

Now that you’re sold on the idea of bringing a change of clothes, let’s talk about how to choose the right outfits for your session. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

1. Think About Your Audience

Who are you trying to reach with your headshots? If you’re aiming for corporate clients, a suit might be your go-to. But if your work leans more creative or you want to show a more approachable side, consider something less formal.

2. Stay True to Your Style

Your headshots should reflect you, not just some ideal version of what you think you should look like. Pick outfits that make you feel comfortable and confident. If you’re not a suit-and-tie person, don’t force it. If you love bold colors, bring them in! The more authentic you feel, the better your photos will turn out.

3. Mix Up the Formality

One easy way to create contrast is by varying the formality of your outfits. Start with something professional, then bring something a little more casual for a different vibe. This way, you’ll have a range of looks that can work for any occasion.

4. Accessorize Smartly

Accessories can change up a look without needing a full outfit change. A blazer, scarf, or even a simple change in jewelry can add variety without much effort.

Let’s Capture the Real You

At the end of the day, your headshots should tell the world who you are. And you’re not just one thing—you’re amazing, and that deserves to be seen from every angle. Whether you’re bringing out your inner Clark Kent, Superman, or even Batman (minus the cape, of course), we’ll make sure every side of your professional story shines through.

So, the next time you book a session with me, don’t hesitate—bring that extra outfit (or two!). Let’s capture the full picture of who you are, no phone booth required.

Laughter, Learning, and Lifelong Mentorship: A Photographic Journey Through Widener's CHHS

Imagine a photoshoot that ditches the stiff poses and captures the true spirit of healthcare education. Laughter, learning, and mentorship collide in a vibrant dance... but can a photographer balance spontaneity with a plan? Discover how Widener University's College of Health & Human Services brought their story to life (and the surprising results that ignited excitement for their programs)!

Once upon a time, in a vibrant land of learning and laughter known as Widener University, a grand adventure unfolded. The quest? To capture the heart and soul of the College of Health & Human Services through a magical photography shoot. Armed with my trusty camera and an infectious sense of whimsy, I embarked on a mission to create a library of images that would serve as versatile treasures for various uses and mediums.

The goal was clear: we needed action-oriented photos that showcased student experts and faculty mentorship in the most authentic, in-the-moment style. No stiff poses or staged smiles here! The essence of Widener’s dynamic and nurturing environment had to shine through each shot.

This was no solo endeavor. The shoot was a harmonious collaboration with the fantastic faculty and the ever-enthusiastic marketing department. Together, we planned to capture the vibrant life within the OT/PT and Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) programs.

A faculty mentor guides two students in hands-on Physical Therapy techniques, nurturing skills and fostering growth.

OT/PT: A Dance of Organized Chaos

Our journey began in the bustling halls of the Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy departments. The scene was a delightful dance of organized chaos. Students were deeply engaged in their hands-on learning experiences, their faces glowing with concentration and joy. Faculty members moved gracefully among them, offering guidance like wise mentors in a fairy tale.

With a skip in my step, I weaved through the energetic crowd, snapping photos of candid moments. One student adjusted equipment with the precision of a master craftsman, while another engaged in an animated discussion about patient care. It was beautifully organic, a bit more chaotic than planned, but brimming with authenticity. The spontaneity added a layer of magic to the photos that no rigid shot list could ever capture.

SLP: The Art of Structured Brilliance

Next, we ventured into the serene world of Speech-Language Pathology. Here, the atmosphere was one of structured brilliance. The SLP team had meticulously prepared a variety of scenarios and interactions for us to capture. It was like walking into a well-choreographed play, where every scene was perfectly timed and executed.

As I clicked away, I captured students working one-on-one with clients, faculty demonstrating techniques, and lively group discussions. The structured approach here provided a rich tapestry of images, each one a testament to the careful planning and the vibrant life of the program.

The photos have been a huge asset for us.

— Nick Hemming, Executive Director of Brand Marketing & Strategy

Vibrant self-mailer, powered by the dynamic photos from our commercial shoot, are igniting excitement for the fall 2024 classes in Occupational Therapy (OT) and Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) at Widener University's College of Health & Human Services.

When the day of shooting came to a close, we had amassed a treasure trove of photos. Reviewing them felt like opening a chest of gold and jewels. The images were dynamic, full of life, and radiated the essence of Widener University’s College of Health & Human Services.

These photos have since become invaluable assets for the university. They’ve been used in self-mailers to help build the fall 2024 classes for Occupational Therapy (OT) and Speech-Language Pathology (SLP). Each image speaks volumes about the exceptional mentorship and hands-on learning environment that Widener offers.

Looking back, I realize that finding the balance between letting the shoot happen organically and adhering to a rigid shot list is an art. The OT/PT portion, though more free-spirited than planned, yielded photos that were raw and real. In contrast, the structured approach of the SLP shoot provided a comprehensive array of meticulously captured moments.

Widener: The Hero of Our Tale

At the heart of this whimsical journey stands Widener University, the true hero of our story. The university’s dedication to fostering a dynamic, supportive, and engaging learning environment shines through every photo. The collaboration between students and faculty, the hands-on experiences, and the genuine passion for their fields of study are all beautifully encapsulated in the images we captured.

As the storyteller behind the lens, it was an absolute joy to be part of this adventure. Widener University’s College of Health & Human Services is a place where learning comes to life in the most enchanting way, and I’m thrilled to have played a part in sharing their story with the world. Here’s to more magical moments and the continued celebration of education, mentorship, and discovery!

Let's talk about super powers! You know, that special something that makes you amazing at what you do? Well, guess what? Professional headshots can be your secret weapon for unleashing your awesomeness online! In this post, I'm sharing why headshots are a game-changer for your personal brand and how to find the perfect photographer to capture your unique magic. Let's shine bright together!

Hey there, rockstar! We all know you're amazing. You've got the skills, the talent, the drive to make a difference. But in today's digital world, how do you show the world that awesomeness? That's where professional headshots come in, and trust me, they're the perfect tool to unleash your inner superstar.

Paul Cleckner, passionate interim CEO of American Bible Society, dedicated to helping others engage deeply with God's word.

Think of your personal brand as your superpower – a unique force you want to unleash online with confidence. Professional headshots are more than just a fancy picture; they're a megaphone for your awesomeness, amplifying your voice and grabbing attention. Here's why having professional headshots is your secret weapon for personal branding domination:

Shine Bright, Build Trust: First impressions are your chance to sparkle! A blurry, pixelated photo might leave people scratching their heads (not in a good way!). High-quality headshots show you take pride in presenting your best self, and that translates into serious trust and credibility. Imagine you're networking online – would you be more likely to connect with someone who radiates confidence in a polished headshot, or someone whose profile picture is a grainy shot from college? Easy choice, right?

Stand Out From the Crowd: Let's face it, the online world is a bustling marketplace. But with professional headshots, you can instantly elevate your profile and become a magnet for attention. Picture this: polished visuals set you apart from the masses, making you appear approachable, professional, and ready to conquer your goals.

Boss Your Online Presence: These days, a strong online presence is your launchpad to success. Professional headshots are a must-have superpower for your website, social media channels, and even online portfolios. Consistent, high-quality visuals across your platforms create a cohesive brand identity that's impossible to forget.

Leave a Lasting Impression: Visuals are powerful storytellers. A great headshot can capture your personality, warmth, and infectious professionalism in a single glance. It's that extra something that makes people remember you long after they've seen your profile, leaving a lasting impression that screams, "This is someone I want to know!"

Build Strong Connections: Whether you're a freelancer, entrepreneur, or corporate titan, building strong relationships is your secret sauce for success. Professional headshots can help you appear more approachable and trustworthy, paving the way for positive client interactions and epic collaborations.

The Digital Age Advantage: We live in a world where attention spans are shorter than a goldfish's memory. People are bombarded with information on a daily basis. High-quality, eye-catching visuals are your superpower for grabbing attention fast and keeping people engaged with your online content. Remember, captivating visuals are like a magic trick – they make people stop, look, and want to learn more about your amazing self.

Choosing Your Perfect Partner: Ready to unleash your inner superstar with professional headshots? Here are some tips to find the photographer who'll be your sidekick:

  • Experience is Your Ally: Look for a photographer with a proven track record of creating stunning personal branding visuals.

  • Customization is Key: The best photographers become your personal hype squad. They'll work with you to understand your brand and tailor the shoot to capture your unique personality and style.

  • Technology Matters: Don't settle for outdated equipment. Opt for a photographer who uses cutting-edge technology to ensure your headshots are modern and impactful.

  • Read the Reviews: Check online reviews and testimonials to get a sense of the photographer's professionalism and their ability to make clients feel comfortable and confident.

  • Invest Wisely: Yes, cost is a factor, but remember, you're investing in your personal brand superpower. Prioritize quality to ensure you get headshots that truly represent you at your best.

The Takeaway: You Are Amazing. Show the World!

Professional headshots are no longer a luxury – they're the ultimate tool to showcase your amazing self in today's digital world. By investing in quality visuals, you're taking control of your online narrative and unleashing your awesomeness on the world. So ditch the blurry selfies and outdated photos, and let your professional headshot tell your story. Remember, you deserve to make a lasting impression, and with the power of a picture, you can. Now go out there and show the world what you're made of – you are amazing!

From Layoff to Love

I had this sweet gig, doing what I loved with an awesome crew, great bosses, decent cash flow, international travel, and all the workplace perks. Life was pretty good until the dreaded pink slip came my way. Cue the sad music and a whole lot of soul-searching. But hey, in every storm cloud, there's a silver lining, right?

3 Takeaways from My Headshot Hustle

So, picture this: I had this sweet gig, doing what I loved with an awesome crew, great bosses, decent cash flow, international travel, and all the workplace perks. Life was pretty good until the dreaded pink slip came my way. Cue the sad music and a whole lot of soul-searching. But hey, in every storm cloud, there's a silver lining, right? Turns out, my time at American Bible Society wasn't just about fundraising and meetings. Nope, it's the place where my love for capturing headshots came to life. Here are three nuggets of wisdom I picked up along the way:

Awesome headshot of Rob Giorgio, my former colleague, now rocking it at The Agency Network at MJH Life Sciences! He's killing it in his new role!

1. Nailing the Tech Stuff (and the Essence)

Okay, so let's get one thing straight – taking a headshot isn't just about pointing and shooting. There's a whole bag of tricks involved. I'm talking lighting, angles, and all that jazz. During my ABS days, I dove headfirst into mastering the technical side of things. It was trial and error, my friends. But eventually, I figured out how to work that camera like a boss. Yet, here's the kicker – a good headshot isn't just a pretty picture. It's a snapshot of someone's vibe, their essence, their whole deal. So yeah, mastering the technical stuff is essential, but capturing that spark? That's where the magic happens.

2. Getting Chatty (Even if You're More of a Quiet Type)

Now, let's get real for a minute – I'm about as introverted as they come. Small talk? Not exactly my jam. But you know what? Life has this funny way of throwing you into situations that force you out of your comfort zone. For me, one of those situations was headshot photography. Suddenly, I found myself face-to-face with people I barely knew, tasked with capturing their essence in a single frame. It was nerve-wracking, to say the least. But here's the thing I discovered – connection is everything. As uncomfortable as it was at first, I realized that opening up, even just a little, could make all the difference. So, I took a deep breath, mustered up some small talk, and you know what? It wasn't so bad. In fact, it was kinda liberating. Turns out, people are pretty awesome when you give them a chance. So, to all my fellow wallflowers out there, take it from me – sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone is the best thing you can do. Who knows? You might just make someone's day with a killer headshot and a killer convo.

3. Sweating the Small Stuff

Here's the deal – details matter. Like, a lot. It's the little things – fixing stray hairs, adjusting the lighting, tweaking the pose – that take a headshot from meh to marvelous. I learned to obsess over the details. I'm talking zooming in, scrutinizing every pixel kind of obsession. And you know what? It paid off big time. Because when you sweat the small stuff, you end up with headshots that turn heads. So yeah, don't skimp on the details, folks. Trust me, they're the secret sauce to killer headshots.

So, there you have it – my journey from layoff to love. Absolutely, being handed that pink slip was like a punch to the gut. But hey, sometimes life throws you a curveball, and you gotta roll with the punches. And who knows? Maybe, just maybe, that curveball will lead you to your true calling. As I embark on this new chapter, I'm reminded that every setback is an opportunity in disguise. So keep hustling, keep snapping, and never underestimate the power of a killer headshot. It might just be the start of something incredible.

From darkness to the light.

Dive into the heart of the illumiNations campaign with me as we journey through the creation of powerful portraits aiming to shed light on the plight of over 1 billion Bibleless individuals worldwide. From concept to execution, discover how we turned a mission of monumental proportions into captivating visuals that resonate with the soul. Join me as we explore the process, the challenges, and the profound impact of storytelling through the lens of photography. Let's illuminate the narratives that matter most.

How Stunning Portraits Illuminate the I WANT TO KNOW Campaign Story.

The Brief

Bible translation alliance illumiNations has a mission: reaching the more than 1 billion people alive today without a Bible in their language. It’s a mission so big that you can barely wrap your mind around it! But when illumiNations asked me to capture photographs that could tell the story of 1 billion Bibleless people, I jumped at the chance to take on this once-in-a-lifetime project.

The Process

The theme of the illumiNations campaign was “I Want to Know.” Its overall messaging was serious–after all, 1 billion people without the Bible in their language is a serious problem. But there were also elements of hope, and an opportunity for people across America to respond to this campaign by supporting Bible translation work. As the lead photographer on this project, I got to sit at the table with some of the best in the business to help shape this campaign. We had several models from language groups without the Bible lined up to work with us. Our creative partners knew they wanted powerful portraits of each person. The only question was how to create the perfect picture that could visually communicate the need for Bible translation.

As a photographer, I was thrilled with the task of brainstorming how to take these portraits to the next level. I believe that the human face can often tell the most compelling stories. There’s nothing quite as moving as a good portrait–whether it’s in an art museum, on a billboard, or on a LinkedIn profile. And as a big fan of both photography and the Bible, I also know all about the importance of light and darkness. These ideas merged into a creative vision that shaped our approach to this campaign.

I started with a dark, simple background, which helped our models appear as if they were emerging out of the darkness and into the light. I kept a tight focus on each model’s face, bringing the viewer up close and personal. I also spent time helping our models communicate their stories with their expressions. As a photographer, I have learned that expression coaching is a key part of any good portrait photography skill set. Many times, the slightest prompts can result in a completely different expression–and a completely different story. I helped our models communicate the weight of the need for Bible translation without accidentally expressing the wrong emotions like sadness, anger, fear, or pain. The result is a set of high-quality portraits that tug on your heartstrings as you make eye contact with each model.

Once we had our portraits, we used my creative vision as the jumping-off point for our videographer. His video interviews with our models mirrored my portraits, expanding their stories in a new way. Together, we created all the visual assets for a clean and cohesive campaign that perfectly complemented our models’ stories.

Sample Facebook Feed ads conceptualized by Haven, the marketing agency behind Illuminations’ “I Want to Know" campaign.

The Result

In 2021, illumiNations launched the national campaign, which was billed as the largest awareness campaign ever for Bible translation. In addition to digital and print ads and billboards, my portraits were featured on multiple news sites, shown in ads at conferences, and highlighted in major donor communications. Getting the press attention and seeing my photographs on billboards was unforgettable, but I’m more proud of the way this campaign helped people consider the needs of others through simple, powerful portraits.

Let’s Capture Portraits That Tell Your Story!

Behind every brand or campaign are people–even if it’s just you, promoting your own personal brand! Keeping people front and center through portrait photography can help you tell your story. Whether you need a creative vision for a multi-million dollar ad campaign, new LinkedIn headshots that can show people who you really are, or coaching on how to look your best in photos, I’m here to help tell your story.

A Door of Hope

When it came time to plan their annual fundraising banquet, pregnancy center A Door of Hope had a bold vision. They wanted a video that could introduce their donors to one of the women whose life changed through their generosity–someone who truly captures the heart of A Door of Hope’s mission. I was excited to team up with A Door of Hope and share the story of Lily, a new mom who changed her mind after taking an abortion pill and chose life instead!

Capturing the Essence of Your Nonprofit: A Guide to Creating Impactful Videos.

The Brief

When it came time to plan their annual fundraising banquet, pregnancy center A Door of Hope had a bold vision. They wanted a video that could introduce their donors to one of the women whose life changed through their generosity–someone who truly captures the heart of A Door of Hope’s mission. I was excited to team up with A Door of Hope and share the story of Lily, a new mom who changed her mind after taking an abortion pill and chose life instead!

The Process

In each video I create, I help position my subjects as the heroes of their own stories. With Lily, this was easy to do! She’s an amazing woman with an incredible story to tell. My only job was using my nonprofit storytelling skills to help her feel empowered to share her story on camera.

Creating a comfortable environment was essential to capturing Lily's authentic essence on camera.

Just like real estate, location is a key factor in nonprofit videography. My first choice is to shoot videos in my subject’s home, which often helps them feel more comfortable and adds a personal touch to the video. But when that option wasn’t available for Lily, we transformed a small conference room at A Door of Hope into a dining room, complete with warm lighting and thoughtful details. The location didn’t distract from Lily’s story. Even better, it helped her relax and set the stage for our conversation.

Being on camera doesn’t come naturally to most of us–me included! The lights, the lenses, and the teleprompters can make anyone freeze. As an expert in nonprofit videography, I know that people like Lily can tell us the stories we need to hear. That’s why I want the video process to feel as natural as possible. I prefer one-on-one interviews to teleprompters or scripts. Many times, this conversational style uncovers hidden gems that stick with your donors forever. Lily and I spent the first few minutes of our shoot making small talk. By the time the cameras started rolling, her beautiful personality and excitement to be a mom were shining through–guaranteeing that donors would not only hear about the difference they made, but actually see it written all over her face!

Once our interview was over, we spent time recreating scenes of Lily’s first visit to A Door of Hope to show donors the kind of care their support provides. I tied Lily’s footage together with B-roll, music, and a clear call to action, making one complete story for A Door of Hope donors to enjoy.

We love these videos! I think when people donate, they will be thinking of Lily’s pretty face. That has a huge impact.
— Rachel Metzger, Executive Director of A Door of Hope

The Result

When Lily’s video premiered at A Door of Hope’s banquet, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. 300 donors witnessed the difference they made in one person’s life in a way they’d never experienced before. They responded by giving $80,000 to continue supporting moms like Lily, which was a 10% increase from A Door of Hope’s previous banquet! By investing in this video, A Door of Hope has a piece that can inspire their donors for years to come.

Let’s Inspire Your Donors Together!

One of the best ways to capture the heart of your nonprofit is to let those you serve speak for themselves. The power of a good video is that it not only tells the story, but it shows the difference your donors make. A nonprofit video can elevate your website, email campaign, or fundraising event and help donors connect with your mission in a new way.

If you’re seeking an experienced videographer in the Greater Philadelphia area, I’d love to see what we can make together.

American History in a New Light.

When award-winning design studio Local Projects began planning the $60 million Faith and Liberty Discovery Center in historic Philadelphia, they knew they wanted to document the journey. But with 40,000 square feet of gallery space, this was not your average interior photography project. I was honored to take on the challenge of bringing this new attraction to life!

Inviting Visitors into Your Space: The Art of Photography at the Faith and Liberty Discovery Center

The Brief

When award-winning design studio Local Projects began planning the $60 million Faith and Liberty Discovery Center in historic Philadelphia, they knew they wanted to document the journey. But with 40,000 square feet of gallery space, this was not your average interior photography project. I was honored to take on the challenge of bringing this new attraction to life!

The Process

As staff photographer for American Bible Society, I was right upstairs from the Faith and Liberty Discovery Center. This gave me unique access to the space and helped me capture its entire journey from idea to reality. I was there from groundbreaking to opening day, striking a visual balance between the center’s key components of faith, American history, and cutting-edge technology.

During construction, I donned my hardhat and shot half-finished galleries with the goal of helping stakeholders feel like they were right there with me. I spent hours getting to know each high-tech gallery, including immersive listening booths and interactive theaters. Some might say I was having too much fun–and they’d be right! But I was also able to confidently coach models on how to interact with each exhibit in a way that showcased its advanced technology. As the construction crew added finishing touches to Local Projects’ stunning design, I captured the character and detail of the interior spaces, as well as the design and the historic location of the museum’s exterior.

Throughout this whole process, I kept future visitors in mind: school groups on a field trip; grandparents on a day out with their grandkids; first-time visitors to Philadelphia. What was most important for them to see? How could I help them envision themselves in this space? And how could I get them excited about visiting this one-of-a-kind museum? These questions helped me go beyond commercial space photography and create something truly unforgettable.

As the only person who’s photographed every square inch of the Faith and Liberty Discovery Center, you can believe me when I say there’s nothing else like it. Capturing it through photography was one of the biggest projects of my career to date, but I’m happy to say that the final photos speak for themselves.

The Result

Photo of the Welcome Gallery at the Faith and Liberty Discovery Center

By the time the Faith and Liberty Discovery Center opened to the public in 2021, I had created an extensive collection of high-quality photos that you still check out on the center's website. The Faith and Liberty Discovery Center used my photos in its initial marketing campaigns, and the folks at Local Projects were thrilled to have such a huge library of visual content that documented their project from start to finish. And when Local Projects and the Faith and Liberty Discovery Center were shortlisted for a Dezeen Award, my photos showcased the interior and exterior space.
